From May 9 to 17, 2024, Alxa Desert UNESCO Global Geopark Administration and a research team from Inner Mongolia Agricultural University conducted a joint field survey to investigate the distribution and population status of goitered gazelles (Gazella subgutturosa) within six autonomous region-level nature reserves in Alxa League. The survey covered the following protected areas:East Alxa Nature Reserve,Tengger Desert Nature Reserve,Alxa Left Banner Dinosaur Fossil Site,Badain Jaran Desert Nature Reserve,Badain Jaran Desert Lakes Area,Mazongshan Paleontological Fossil Site in Ejina Banner.
The research team was led by Professor Gao Runhong from Inner Mongolia Agricultural University, with participation from Deputy Director Tuositai and Section Chief Qingsong of the Alxa Desert Geopark Administration, along with seven other members. Local authorities from three banners (counties), 12 townships (Sumu), and 22 villages (Gacha) provided logistical support. The team employed the following approaches:Direct field observations,Aerial surveys using drones,Interviews with 15 local herders,Household questionnaires. The key findings includes population observations:total gazelles recorded: 61 (27 males, 34 females),highest single-day count: 25 individuals near Yabrai Mountain in Alxa Right Banner, largest herd observed: 12 individuals in Ih Bulag Village, Alxa Left Banner, sample collection:collected 12 biological samples (horns, legs, fur, and feces) for further analysis, habitat and ecology, primary habitats: desert, grassland, rocky mountains, and Gobi ecosystems etc,.The research team conducted educational sessions for local herders and officials on:Gazelle population monitoring, species identification, conservation practices. This comprehensive survey provides essential baseline data for the conservation and management of goitered gazelle populations in the Alxa region, while contributing to our understanding of these desert ecosystems.
