To facilitate a deeper understanding among college students from mainland China and Hong Kong, China, as well as students from Alxa , about the wind and sand landforms in the northwest arid region, and to further promote science popularization education and the dissemination of scientific knowledge, thereby enhancing their national and ethnic identity and sense of belonging, the Alxa Desert UGGp organized an exchange and practical teaching activity for science popularization study tours on July 8. Deputy Director Zhang Shihui of the Alxa Youqi Forest and Grassland Bureau attended the event and delivered an opening speech. The event was attended by 77 students and teachers from Lanzhou University, Southwest University, Hong Kong Baptist University, and the University of Hong Kong, as well as 63 high school students from Alxa Yuzi No. 1 High School. Joining them were staff members from the Alxa Desert UGGp Administration and the Alxa Youqi Branch of Alxa UGGp Administration.
This science popularization exchange activity featured a rich mix of field trips, engaging lectures, and interactive question-and-answer sessions that immersed the students in the vast ocean of natural knowledge. Firstly, students conducted on-site investigations at the Badain Lake in Badain Jaran Deser, climbed towering sand dunes, and gained an initial understanding of the formation of the high sand dunes and lake ecosystems, as well as the water circulation process in the Badain Jaran Desert.
Secondly, representatives from the Alxa Desert UGG , sharing insights in an accessible manner, provided an overview of the geopark concept, unique geological landscapes of Alxa , and desert biodiversity. During the Q&A session, students were highly active, eagerly delving into the mysteries of the desert and deepening their knowledge.
Thirdly, Professor Li Zhuolun, a doctoral supervisor from Lanzhou University, delivered a specialized science popularization lecture titled "Decoding the Secrets of the Badain Jaran Desert," elucidating the geological, ecological, and other thematic content of the Badain Jaran Desert. This provided a fresh perspective for educators and students, enhancing their understanding of Alxa 's geoscience significance and igniting their enthusiasm for exploration and research in the desert.
Fourthly, four student representatives from Lanzhou University, Southwest University, Hong Kong Baptist University, and the University of Hong Kong shared their insights on their desert study tours, expressing their desire to organize another group to study in Alxa Desert UGGp.
Lastly, college students interacted enthusiastically with high school students from Alxa Youqi, sharing effective study strategies and exam preparation tips, creating a vibrant atmosphere.
Through this event, the students have deepened their understanding of the Alxa Desert, recognizing the significance of integrating knowledge with practice and engaging in study tours for personal development. Their exposure to knowledge about wind and sand landforms has cultivated a sense of gratitude for nature within them, igniting their passion for venturing into the natural world to explore the mysteries of science.
In the future, the geopark will continue to organize a range of natural science popularization activities, including a series of lectures and study tour exchanges, aiming to garner wider interest and participation from students and teachers for Alxa 's science popularization activities. This will work to increase the recognition and influence of the UGGp 's study tour brand.
