On April 22, Alxa Desert UNESCO Global Geopark launched a series of thematic events at Helan Mountain to celebrate the 55th World Earth Day, the 5th Asia Pacific Geoparks Week, and the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. The diverse activities spanned across all zones of Alxa Desert Geopark and were simultaneously held in collaboration with 45 other geoparks across China, including Danxiashan, Yandangshan, Qinling-Zhongnanshan, and Longyan.
At the opening ceremony, Director Huang Tianbing of Alxa Desert Geopark interpreted this year’s Earth Day theme and announced the kickoff of the "Exploring Geological Wonders, Embarking on an Extraordinary Journey" science education tour. He invited the public to explore the beauty of Geoparks, encouraging students to connect with nature.
Highlights of the activities included: Students recorded short videos advocating for Earth Day, while a photo exhibition showcased sister geoparks,Visitors participated in eco-friendly initiatives like waste classification workshops and a park cleanup campaign,Science outreach programs were held in local schools, featuring themed lectures on geology, flora, and culture. Students co-created a "100-meter Earth Art Scroll" and visited desert botanical gardens.
The celebration for the Earth Day running until April 28, the campaign also features:sister geopark exhibitions, interactive displays,online science challenges, Geoparks on Stamps photo spots,"Geopark Study Tour Passport" stamp collections.
These initiatives highlight the scientific, aesthetic, and cultural values of China’s geoparks, which span six geographic regions and showcase diverse landscapes like colorful hills, Danxia landforms, glaciers, and deserts.
Moving forward, Alxa Desert Geopark will collaborate with partner Geoparks on events like the "Most Beautiful Earth Imprints" photo contest and virtual tours led by park directors. The public is invited to join these efforts to safeguard our shared home and achieve harmony between humanity and nature.
