Recently, during a field survey conducted by Alxa Desert Global Geopark administration, a new type of geological heritage was discovered. After on-site verification, experts have confirmed it to be a basalt columnar jointing zone.
Located in Alateng'aobao Town, Alxa Right Banner, this basalt columnar jointing zone features well-preserved formations, unique shapes, and distinct volcanic eruption characteristics with tightly arranged, staggered pillars, making it highly visually striking.
Basalt columnar jointing is a distinctive geological landscape formed during the cooling process of volcanic lava. Studying these formations can provide insights into ancient geological environments. While such phenomena are found worldwide, they are exceptionally rare in western of China.
The discovery holds significant scientific value for research on regional tectonic evolution, volcanic eruption types, geological periods, and mineral exploration. It also adds a new geological attraction to Alxa Desert UNESCO Global Geopark, further enhancing its scientific, aesthetic, and educational significance.
