New Bird Record Discovered in Alxa Desert UNESCO Global Geopark: The Yellowhammer

2025-04-08 0

On April 6, the Alxa Birdwatching Association reported an exciting discovery—a Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella) was photographed in the Helan Mountains in Alxa Desert UNESCO Global Geopark. Confirmed by ornithology expert Yang Guisheng, this marks the first recorded sighting of the species in Inner Mongolia.

The Yellowhammer, a small songbird, is commonly found across Eurasia. In China, it has been spotted in Xinjiang, with rare sightings in Heilongjiang, Beijing, and Hebei. This individual was observed in Alxa Left Banner’s South Temple area, mingling with a small group of Pine Buntings. Unlike its shyer companions, the Yellowhammer perched boldly on an outer branch, showing off its bright yellow belly and reddish-brown rump.

The Alxa Birdwatching Association, a key partner of Alxa Desert Global Geopark, has been conducting bird surveys and wildlife monitoring. In 2024, they’ve documented 10 new bird species in the region, including the Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Black-tailed Waxwing, and Hooded Crane. This discovery reflects the improving ecosystem in Alxa, thanks to sustained conservation efforts. The geopark plans to enhance bird monitoring, protect habitats, and raise public awareness to safeguard biodiversity.
